What is a Lamproom?
A Lamproom used to be a place to store and issue the required safety equipment to employees before they would go underground. But the starting point for effective management of employee safety and access control to high-risk areas or underground mining operations lies in the Lamproom.
An A&R Lamproom is more.
Not only does it control access to high-risk and underground mining areas, but it also manages the safety and related equipment, capturing data for tracking, managing and reporting purposes.
Why is a Lamproom crucial for underground mining operations?
To ensure the safety of people, to optimise production, protect assets and effectively utilise resources – business rules must be in place. The Lamproom is the main point of control to apply these rules.
By applying the rules, we reduce the risk to the mine and its appointed persons and increase the safety advantage:
- Keeping people safe
- Managing and controlling the use of equipment
- Reducing production disturbances
- Adding positive associations to the reputation of mines.

How does the A&R Group implement Lamp Room Solutions?
We, as the A&R Group, have years of experience, insight and comprehension of the mining industry. Driven by consideration and compassion for people in mining, as well as the industry requirements, a Lamproom Management system was designed.
It was further developed, adapted, and improved over the years to accompany the changing environment and regulations. Incorporating new technologies and innovating new solutions for the changing times.
Always keeping the safety and well-being of people in focus, while providing a comprehensive solution to our clients, through a user-friendly interface, that can be integrated with existing infrastructure and provides real-time data that is applicable to each client’s needs.
What does A&R Group LMS offer our clients?
Accurate Information:
The LMS system receives the approved electronic personnel records from the client’s Time and Attendance (T&A) and Human Resources IT system. This ensures the information is accurate and reduces the need for manual re-capturing or uploading of records.
The LMS retrieves license, certification, and access-permission information of each employee. The information is used to control access to high-risk areas, only allowing authorised personnel to enter and perform their applicable duties.
Equipment control and management:
Safety and related equipment are controlled and managed by the LMS system. This includes storage, charging, testing, issuing, maintaining, control, and tracking.
All equipment is captured and electronically linked in the LMS database.
Equipment is tagged and allocated to a person, scanned, and recorded on the system. Equipment and the allocation to employees are recorded and can be tracked.
The LMS enforces the pre-shift testing of relevant equipment. Before accessing the high-risk area via the turnstiles, each person passes through a verification station, verifying
- All licenses and certifications are valid.
- The minimum required equipment is allocated and present (on the person).
- The functionality tests of applicable equipment are passed.

This ensures everyone begins their shift with their required, functional, assigned equipment. Without complying to the business rules, a person will not be granted access to the high-risk area.
Equipment managed through the LMS includes:
- Caplamps
- Gas Detection Instruments
- Self-Contained Self-Rescuers

Upon returning from shift, equipment is verified again, the shift data is loaded onto the database. Actions for equipment maintenance or replacements can be logged, recorded, and put into action, including:
- Inspections
- Calibrations
- Leak testing

A person will not be permitted to leave the Lamproom or Control Point should all equipment not be returned in the specified manner. All deviances, infringements, and errors must be reported and captured. This ensures accurate equipment metadata and provides valuable information for reporting and diagnostic purposes.
Real-time Reporting
The Lamproom management system provides management with real-time interactive data reporting. Dashboards with equipment and personnel information is available, that aids in the identification of risks and opportunities:
- Historical data
- Trends
- Records

Test failures and errors can also be tracked and traced. Shift-clearance records are also available to complete end-of-shift processes and determine if all personnel are out of danger.
Vehicle & Equipment Control Point
Any vehicle can be integrated into the LMS system. Thus, also managing vehicle access to risk areas. The solution provides for both permanent and visitor vehicles.
In Conclusion
The Lamproom Management Solution gives you the intelligent, automated tools you need to manage and monitor people, safety equipment, and assets. Reducing the risk to each employee and the mine, while improving the overall safety of operations.
